Essay Guide

The four essay frameworks used this term, each with a worked example, sentence starters, and a tailored checklist — your reference for Week 7 and Week 15.

Why this page: every 4 weeks you learn a new essay framework — OREO, then PEEL, then CER, then PREP+Rebuttal. Your Week 7 essay becomes your Week 8 presentation. Your Week 15 essay becomes your Week 16 presentation. Come back to this page on those weeks.

OREO · Opinion Essay

Opinion → Reason → Example → Opinion

Opinion: I think students should not have homework on weekends.

Reason: Weekends are the only real break from the busy school week.

Example: My friend felt tired every Monday because she did homework all weekend instead of resting.

Opinion (again): That's why weekends should stay homework-free.

Starters you can try: "I think..." / "In my opinion..." · "The reason is..." / "This is because..." · "For example..." / "One time, this happened:..."

My opinion is one clear sentence — not two different ideas.
My example is a real, specific moment, not a general idea.
My last sentence restates the same opinion I started with.

PEEL · Opinion Essay

Point → Evidence → Explain → Link

Point: Robots should go first into dangerous places.

Evidence: Robots can be rebuilt, but a person's life cannot.

Explain: This means a company risks money, not a person's safety.

Link: That's why sending a robot first is the safer choice.

PEEL's biggest trap: giving evidence, then jumping straight to the link, with no Explain step in between.

My Evidence is a fact or example — not just a stronger restatement of my Point.
My Explain sentence says why the evidence matters — it doesn't just repeat the evidence.
My Link connects back to the original question, not just to my Point.

CER · Problem-Solution Essay

Claim → Evidence → Reasoning

Claim: Cities should build more bike lanes.

Evidence: Cities with more bike lanes have less traffic and cleaner air.

Reasoning: This happens because fewer people need to drive cars to get around.

CER's biggest trap: Reasoning that just repeats the Evidence instead of explaining why the evidence proves the Claim.

My Evidence is a fact, not an opinion.
My Reasoning explains why the evidence supports my claim — new words, not a copy of the evidence sentence.
Someone who disagreed with me could still understand my claim clearly.

PREP + Rebuttal · Problem-Solution Essay

Point → Reason → Example → Point, then one Rebuttal

Point: Vaccines have helped people the most.

Reason: because they stop diseases before people ever get sick.

Example: smallpox used to kill millions of people every year, and the vaccine ended it.

Point (again): that's why vaccines are the most important invention.

Rebuttal: Some might say surgery has helped more people directly — but surgery treats one person at a time, while a vaccine protects everyone before they get sick.

My Point is stated in my first sentence, clearly.
My Rebuttal names a real, different opinion — not a weak or silly one.
After my Rebuttal, I explain why I still think I'm right — I don't just end on the other side's point.
